Soft Products
Cold rolled steel increases in hardness after a rolling process and requires softening to enable the steel strip. The strip is to be drawn or shaped for special applications like drum making, whit goods, automobile parts.The strip is cleaned in an electrolyte and alkaline bath to remove residual oil and dirt from the strip. After the cleaning process the coils are annealed in the Bell furnaces.Annealing is a process of heating the steel coils in a controlled temperature and atmosphere zone and subsequently cooling the coils. This controlled heating and cooling reduces the hardness of the steel and makes it more ductile or malleable. After the annealing process, the strip is then skin-passed to improve the flatness of the strip with controlled elongation and rolling.

PT Essar uses High Convection Hydrogen (HICON) annealing to achieve better quality on the soft products. The HICON annealing process from Ebner, Austria uses inert hydrogen atmosphere in the process chamber, which is circulated with variable speed fans to ensure uniform temperature and soaking of the coils. The resulting strip is ultra bright with uniform mechanical properties, free of any residual carbon from the strip oil. Advanced protection systems ensure total operating safety with Hydrogen.Skinpassing, a light cold rolling operation, is employed to improve flatness, produce the final surface finish or texture, develop mechanical properties, and/or reduce the tendency of stretcher strain or fluting during forming.Soft products are mainly applied in the automobile industry, drum making, pipe and tube industry, white goods appliances and furniture and involve a very stringent quality control to suit the customer's application.

The cold rolled coils from the rolling mill are Full Hard grade and are normally the basic input for the galvanizing industry.The galvanizing industry contributes majority of flat steel consumption, with variety of applications from automotive heat shields to roofing, packaging, cooling units, appliances etc.The Full Hard coils are trimmed or slit to the specific widths required by the customers before being packaged and delivered. Tension levelling is used to ensure flatnessof the product. Coils are customized by size and weight to be delivered. Recoiling cum trimming line and slitting lines are capable to delivering the requirement. Slitting line is also used to produce slit coils with widths up to 50mm with precise width tolerances.

. Galvanizing is a process in which protective coating is offered by zinc to prevent corrosion of base metal. The protective coating offered by zinc is dual in nature. It provides a protective barrier layer that insulates the steel from corrosive attacks, and also sacrificial/ cathodic protection to the exposed area of the steel. The rapid corrosion of steel by de-icing salts has brought the steel users & manufacturers of automobiles & appliances inclined towards coated products.Hot dip galvanizing is the most commonly used process today as it takes care of all the problems of corrosion. Also zinc coating by hot dip galvanizing has been found to be more stable & tough even in the most aggressive environments. Continuous strip galvanizing by hot dip method is done in series of processes. These are preparation of strip, annealing of strip, controlled zinc coating, cooling, skin passing, imparting flatness & passivation.

The CR strip to be galvanized needs to be cleaned of scale, oil, iron fines & other surface contaminants is passed through alkaline solution subsequent cleaning action is done by rotating brushes. The strip then enters the non-oxidation furnace where it is directly exposed to a set of burners.The burners are preset on a fixed air: gas ratio to enable an oxidizing atmosphere in the first zone & slightly reducing atmosphere in the subsequent zones. The strip is degreased as soon as it passes through the first zone of non-ox furnace. These oxides are reduced in the last part of the non ox furnace where the ambient temperature is maintained between 1200 and 1300 degrees Celcius depending upon the strip thickness & line speed.

The strip then passes through a radiant tube furnace where the strip is taken to annealing temperature in the presence of protective atmosphere of nitrogen & hydrogen. The strip temperature is maintained between 550 & 750 degrees Celcius, depending on end use of the strip. The strip then passes through a precisely controlled gas fired soaking zone to achieve the desired properties in the material followed by controlled jet cooling section to bring down the temperature of the strip very near to the zinc bath temperature prior to entering the zinc bath. The strip is then immersed in molten zinc bath and zinc iron alloy layer formation takes place over the strip in the form of zinc coating. The strip as it comes out of the bath is passed through an air jet air knife where the excess zinc is removed from the surface in order to obtain the desired coating thickness.

For better quality & uniform zinc coating the zinc bath composition analysis is done . The inline coating guage ensures monitoring of the uniform controlled coating. The strip is then passed through the skin pass mill & tension leveler to achieve the desired elongation & flatness.The strip is finally passed through chromating section & chemical coater in order to provide a uniform chrome coating over the entire surface to prevent formation of white rust & apply thin organic anti-fingerprint solution.

As a part of expansion plan to provide high quality customized products and move up in the niche supply chain, PT Essar Indonesia inaugurated the new CR slitter on 11th Jun'08. This along-with the 2 new cut to length lines (mini shear and big shear) inaugurated last month has marked the completion of the service centre expansion project.The new service centre facility will use PT Essar's cold rolled and galvanized products and will also be available for tolling requirements. The new setup can supply material of thickness ranging from 0.2mm to 3.2 mm, width from 30mm to 1380 mm and length from 100 mm to 6000 mm. We aim to be more than just a material supplier, we aim to be a true service provider - to provide a fast, convenient and highly flexible service for customers using smaller quantities of steel on a more local level.
